8 Tips To Streamline The Big Move

Since our big move, we’ve had many people ask how we managed it all. And the truth is it was nowhere near as easy as we made it look. In fact, it was probably the most stressful time of our life. Here are some tips to make your next big move less scary and more exciting.

Pick a moving day very far in advance

Packing up an entire house and moving long distance is always a much bigger task than it seems and everyone always underestimates the amount of time they actually need. Give yourself the amount of time you think you need, and tack on a few extra weeks.

Book your removalist in as far in advance as well

If you’re making the big move from city to country, country to city or long distance, the best option would be to hire a removalist such as Hire-A-Mover. It’s so much more stressful if you’re trying to do multiple trips interstate when you have other things at home to attend to. Letting the removalist know well in advance also leaves room to let them know of any changes that will most likely occur during this time.

Declutter your house

The less stuff there is to move the better. Start room by room and throw out or donate all the items that are unnecessary. This will make your packing process much simpler.

Conduct an inventory of all your belongings

As you pack things away into the box, one by one, have your laptop on hand and list the item with the box you’ve put it in. This is the easiest way to keep track of all the items and will make unpacking a lot easier. It also makes life easier when working with the removalist, so they know exactly how many boxes they’re moving on the big day.

Label and number your boxes

As well as labelling the room the box belongs to, numbering them will help with when you conduct your inventory and when you need to unpack again.

Keep your personal items close

Anything of real value to you such as jewellery or your laptop with all your personal information, should be kept on hand- just to be on the safe side.

Recognise the fragility of items

Your items will be travelling a long way, so things may more than likely break. Take extra precautions to secure fragile items, wrapping them in blankets

Conduct a list of things you need to switch over

You’re not just changing addresses; you’re changing states, or even countries. The further you move the more paperwork you need to fill out: license transfers, number plates, utilities, electoral regions and so many more. It’s best to identify all the different things you need to change and start the process early.
